Delay Tax Receipts for Check Donations Until Funds Are Received

Currently, tax receipts are issued immediately when a check donation is recorded, even if the check hasn’t arrived. This can cause issues if checks are delayed or never received. It would be beneficial to have an option or feature that allows issuing tax receipts only after the funds have been confirmed as received.

When a donor selects 'Pay by Check' at checkout, it should be recorded as a pledge until the check is marked received.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have talked to give butter about this issue and hope they will rectify it. It causes problems and extra work in my financial bookkeeping. There's a real issue of counting a donation twice - in the give- butter tally & when the check finally arrives and is deposited into a bank account.

I too would love to have this taken care of and not sure of how it’s legal to issue a receipt anyway? When someone indicates online that they are sending a check it’s extremely valuable to know this so we can be on the lookout for it and follow up if it doesn’t show up. At the same time, why should the donor get a receipt? No funds were received. Instead of a receipt, if the system could instead issue a “thank you for your pledge “ message that could work?

In my opinion a donation should not be entered until the funds are in hand. Your books and records will never be accurate if you do this. And in an audit would raise questions:

Agree. I’m not sure how legally a receipt can be sent when no money has actually been received.

Yes please! We have had issues with checks not arriving, or for the amounts being different than what was listed online.
