Add support for popcorn bidding on auctions

Allow admins to enable popcorn bidding on an auction item. This allows bids made within the last minute of an auction to extend the item's end date by 5 minutes.

It's about time, but why the 5 minute restriction? I've been on auctions where the bidders have gone back and forth many times. Also, the bid can be manipulated by 1 bidder waiting to be the 5th bid and therefore locking in the final bid. I think it would be great if there were options that the Org can choose a response time. I have found that 1 minute is too long. I would use either 15 or 30 seconds. 1 Minute drags for too long. Leave the time constraints up to the Orgs.

Popcorn Bidding is now available!
How it works:
- Optionally enable Popcorn Bidding in Auction Settings
- When a bid is placed in the final 2 minutes, the item's end time extends by 1 minute
- Items can extend up to 5 minutes total
- Applies to auction-style items only
Thank you all for your feedback!

Elaine Makikalli This is great. One question: why the five-minute limit? Is it possible to make it so the org can control when the extensions ultimately end?
Elaine Makikalli
Douglas Silver: Hi there, the five-minute limit was intended to give a standardized option for this setting.
Thank you for the feedback. I can submit a feature request for the ability to control the extension setting!

This is a VERY nice way to avoid all those complaints at the check out saying "I thought I was the winner! I would have bid more!"

Popcorn bidding would be an excellent feature to ad. It's an easy way to increase revenue.

How long until this happens?

Our event is the second week of March and I am considering switching platforms if this isn't added by then.

My suggestions would be as follows. First, have an On/Off tab. If the Group wanted to use Popcorn Bidding, they could turn it on. If they don't want to use it, leave it off. I really can't see any group that wouldn't want to use it. Second, have different intervals to choose from. I have seen sites that are at 15 seconds up to 5 minutes. I myself like the 15 or 30 seconds. Anything more than that drags it out too long. It would also depend on the timing of each item. If the auction goes 1 item at a time, 15 seconds works great. If there are multiple items going at the same time, then 1 minute works best so a bidder can tab back and forth between items.

I was going to use this platform but have changed my mind because you do not offer popcorn bidding. How disappointing! It makes bidding more fun and it helps raise the selling price. No reason not to offer it.

Any update on adding popcorn bidding?

I am so dissapointed there is not an option for extended bidding. I have an auction going currently and this is problematic. Our auction closes on 11/9/2025 and I am seriously considering ending it right now and moving to an old platform. This is my first time using Givebutter and I wish I realized this sooner.

I go onto many auction sites looking for different items. GiveButter is the ONLY one that doesn't have Popcorn Bidding !! I want to do an auction for my non-profit in the next month. But I will not do it without Popcorn Bidding. I don't understand why you can't put it on each auction with an on/off switch so we can use it or not. Also, a drop-down table to allow us to choose the time duration. I like 30 sec. Any more, the auction takes too long.
